In 2024, we walked from Port Kembla to Canberra to protest and raise awareness about the impacts of the AUKUS military agreement.

Join us walking in honour of the late Uncle Kevin Buzzacott as part of the first anti-AUKUS protest march and one of the first anti-nuclear walks on the east coast.

We will be walking between Port Kembla (one of the possible locations for the deal’s nuclear submarine base) and Canberra, to voice our opposition to this dangerous military alliance. We are also visiting communities along the south coast and will be speaking to them about the impact of uranium, nuclear and how to promote peace.

We have been invited to walk on Yuin Country by Kieran Stewart-Assheton, a Traditional Owner of Wani-Wandian Country in the Yuin Nation.

Join us on the final walk into Canberra or come to the welcome event!

What to expect on the walk

Walkers can join for as long or as short as you like, or even drop in and out across the month. No-one needs to walk the whole way! We will also need drivers for support vehicles if you would like to join but can’t walk. We will be walking primarily along beaches, bush-tracks, fire-trails and footpaths, with very small parts of the walk alongside the highway.

For those starting the walk, we will be meeting at our first campsite on the afternoon of the 17 March immediately following the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance national meeting in Wollongong. The walk will start on the morning of 18 March, and it will take us around 4 weeks to walk between Port Kembla and Canberra via Batemans Bay. We will walk around 15 km per day, and will have a rest day every 4-5 days.

Each day, we will walk from the previous night’s campsite to a pre-arranged lunch spot, which the support crew will drive to and set up for the walkers. The day’s walk will finish mid-afternoon at our night’s camping spot. The support drivers will transfer all camping gear between campsites and will set up cooking facilities and assist in organising food for the walkers.

Camping will be a mix of formal campsites, caravan parks, friendly locals' backyards and free camping spots along the coast. Please let us know any accessibility requirements.

The walk will finish in Canberra on the 20 April, where we will present our demands to politicians.

See the right hand side of this page for approximate dates and locations of the walk.

How to register

Please contact us on 0494 092 904 to find out how to join the walk.

We will be asking for a contribution of $10 per day from all involved to cover food, petrol for the support vehicles and other incidentals. If this isn't possible, that is fine, we don't want to let money get in the way of people being involved. If you’d like to contribute more, that would be very welcome too!

What to bring

We will have a communal cooking space and marquee, but all other camping gear and equipment must be provided by participants. Apart from a daypack, all personal camping gear will be transferred between campsites by our support vehicles. Please consider bringing the following:
  • Raincoat, gumboots, wet weather gear
  • Comfortable, waterproof shoes
  • Suncreen, toiletries, medications
  • Jumper, scarf, gloves
  • Cup, bowl, cutlery, water bottle
  • Tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag
  • Towel and swimmers for ocean swims
  • Guitars, games and books for time in camp
